For most of the nation, Labor Day marks the end of summer. But if you live in Riverside, it is a traditional cue for a brutal heat wave. Like clockwork, temperatures climbed this week, and announced, ‘I’ll see you 108 and raise you an ungodly amount of humidity.’ What I will describe as ‘rubbing salt in the wound’, fall décor was on full display at the compassionate cancer center, my favorite clothing websites have begun their push on cardigans, and my family/friends in the Washington began their preparations for cool weather.
Instead of glowering at the weather channel, I choose to look on the positive. This heat is perfect for growing incredible farm-fresh produce. Watermelon, cantaloupe, and peaches are at their very best. These high temperatures make homegrown tomatoes burst with flavor, setting the stage for recipes that originally opened my world to the wonders of cooking.
