Dawn Pia’s alter ego is the Notorious P.I.A

Serves – 2
For my entire adult life, my family lived in different states. Getting together was special and usually anchored to weddings, graduations, and big birthdays. After my nephew Jorgen was married, Grammie Lambie, my three sisters, my daughter Annie, my niece Sara, and her two daughters Maddie and Delaney spent a few days at a beach house in Lincoln City, Oregon. We spent lazy days walking on the beach, shopping at the outlet mall, reading, and preparing delicious meals.
After a trip to the outlet mall where I purchased cute outfits for my niece’s daughters, the spoiling continued with a trip to the market to pick up the ingredients for dinner—hamburgers, chips, carrot sticks, and for dessert, a Notorious Black Cow. There is no alcohol in it, but we like this name because some people call me the “Notorious P-I-A.” It is my rap alias.
Rules for making a Black Cow
Rule # 1: A Notorious Black Cow is made with Coca-Cola. Sometimes when at a restaurant, I order a Coke, and the waiter/waitress will say, “Is Pepsi ok”? In my world, it’s not ever ok. To make a Black Cow, it has got to be the real McCoy: Coca-Cola.
Rule # 2: Each person makes her own, even if they are six and eight-year-olds. It is going to make a huge mess.
Rule # 3: Use canned whipped cream without judgment on how much you or anyone else uses.
The reviews for the Notorious Black Cow were mixed. Maddie, Delany, and I all voted that Notorious Black Cow is the best thing ever invented. Annie firmly believes that cream soda is the best. Grammie Lambie thought it was too fattening. Everyone thought the mess was hilarious and worth it. But here is the thing: When you get a chance to celebrate being with family, you just have to do it.
